Reading...
Our classroom will be involved in a researched based literacy program called, Making Meaning. This program focuses on reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing, and social skills. This program also fosters building a community of learners. I am very excited to be launching this new program.
Throughout our daily literacy block students will also be engaged in a series of literacy tasks called the Daily Five. Throughout this literacy framework students will be involved in meaningful, independent tasks. The Daily Five consists of: Reading to self, reading to someone, word work, listen to reading, and work on writing. These tasks will be completed every day for approximately twenty minutes. This framework allows students to read books of their interests at their independent reading levels.
Math...
We will be working out of the Saxon Math Textbook. Each day students are introduced to a new concept. The new concept is modeled by the teacher and then students get the opportunity to engage in guided practice. At the end of the lesson students do have thirty independent practice problems. On most days students will have an opportunity to begin their lesson at school, this gives them time to seek help on difficult problems.
The structure of our math block will be very similar to what students experienced last year.
